Fire at Novosibirsk Zoo: thousands of animals at risk

A fire broke out at the large R. A. Shilo Zoo in Novosibirsk. According to the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, two buildings were completely destroyed in the incident.

Eyewitnesses reported that the blaze started in the back part of the zoo, in an area where construction work was allegedly underway. Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene. According to reports, more than 30 firefighters and 10 pieces of equipment were involved in extinguishing the fire.

The “Baza” Telegram channel reported that the fire also affected some animal enclosures. In particular, areas housing a wild bull, goats, and sika deer were damaged. There are reports that some animals died, although this information has not yet been officially confirmed. Residents living near the zoo claimed they heard the cries of the animals.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, thanks to rapid action, the fire was completely extinguished.

For reference: The Shilo Novosibirsk Zoo is one of the largest in Russia. It is home to more than 12,000 animals representing 790 species. More than 350 of these species are listed in the IUCN Red List.
