Lavrov and Rubio meet in New York on the Ukrainian crisis

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held an important meeting on September 24 in New York within the framework of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. The discussions lasted less than an hour, but their content caught the attention of the international community, reports Meduza.

According to the US State Department, Rubio reiterated President Donald Trump's calls to "stop the killings and take the necessary steps to find a sustainable solution to the Russia-Ukraine war." In his opinion, Washington considers resolving the conflict exclusively through diplomatic means a priority.

The Russian Foreign Ministry, in its statement, stated that the two sides exchanged views on resolving the situation in Ukraine. In particular, Lavrov emphasized that Moscow is "ready to coordinate joint actions with the US to eliminate the root causes of the crisis." At the same time, he added that "artificial schemes that serve to prolong the existing conflict are absolutely unacceptable for Russia."

It should be recalled that Sergey Lavrov and Marco Rubio previously met on July 10 in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur. Even then, one of the main topics was the issue of global agreements on Ukraine.

Thus, the recent negotiations in New York once again demonstrated the sharp difference in approaches between the two major powers on the Ukrainian issue. At the same time, the dialogue itself indicates that diplomacy still plays an important role in stopping the war.
