Lukashenko proposed the idea of building a new NPP in Belarus

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko proposed the construction of a second nuclear power plant (NPP) in the country during a conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. According to him, this project might be implemented to supply electricity to the territories of Ukraine controlled by Russia. The Kremlin website published the meeting minutes on September 26.

Lukashenko explained that the new plant could be built in the eastern part of Belarus. He emphasized that this would involve transmitting energy to regions such as Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk, and Donetsk, which Russia considers its own.

"Rosatom has already developed opportunities to expand the nuclear energy sector. I will not dwell on financial matters in public, but we have various options. If necessary, we can immediately start constructing a new unit or an entire plant," Lukashenko said.

The Russian president responded cautiously to the proposal: "If there is a consumer who takes the electricity and pays according to the established tariff, it is not a problem at all," Putin said.
