A taxi violating traffic rules was stopped by police in San Bruno, California. But experienced inspectors were surprised - the vehicle turned out to be a self-driving driverless taxi belonging to the company Waymo. This was reported by The Guardian.
According to a message circulated by law enforcement agencies on social media, during the raid, the taxi made a turn at the red light while police were checking intoxicated drivers. Therefore, a fine was expected to be prepared, but the document was not issued due to the absence of a procedure for applying a fine to "robots" or driverless systems in the legislation.
The police officially notified Waymo of the malfunction and expressed hope that the vehicles would be reprogrammed to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
The company responded to the incident, stating that its autonomous management system was developed taking into account traffic rules, serious attention is paid to safety, and the situation is being thoroughly studied.
Experts note that this situation once again demonstrated the need to develop new rules and norms in the legal sphere, along with the development of driverless technologies.
