One-eighth of the world's population lives in informal housing

The UN stated that the problem of homelessness has affected the entire planet.

According to the latest UN report, more than 300 million people around the world live without shelter, that is, without permanent housing. At the same time, every eighth part of the planet's population is forced to live in informal settlements. The organization announced this in its statement.

According to the data, the housing problem is not limited to developing or poor countries. For example, in economically developed countries, including the United States, thousands of young people do not have the opportunity to buy a house. Rising rental prices and unstable wage growth are exacerbating this issue.

The UN annually celebrates the first Monday of October as World Habitat Day. This date aims to draw attention to the right of every person to a decent place of residence and to remind the world community of the need for sustainable development of cities and settlements.

2025 Habitat Day will be held under the slogan "Urban Solutions to Crisis." Through this, the organization aims to offer a wide range of solutions to the problems of forced displacement, lack of shelter, and homelessness.

In his address, UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized:

"Today, more than 123 million people have been forced to leave their homes due to conflicts, political instability, and climate change. They are heading to densely populated cities or villages in search of security and stability."

Guterres emphasized that it is the cities that are capable of offering effective solutions to these problems. The main focus should be on infrastructure development, expanding affordable housing programs, and strengthening social protection mechanisms.

As a reminder, according to a previous UN report, 733 million people worldwide are suffering from hunger. At the same time, more than a billion portions of usable food are discarded daily. It is noted that this amount of food is enough to satiate every person suffering from hunger at least once.
