The Parliament of Peru has announced the impeachment of President Dina Boluarte amid growing crime and political instability, Diario Gestion reported.
According to reports, all 122 members of Congress voted unanimously to remove the president from office. No one abstained or voted against.
Lawmakers cited Boluarte’s “moral incapacity” as the main reason for impeachment. They claim that the head of state has been unable to handle the country’s political and social crisis, was involved in corruption, and has lost public trust.
The document notes that the level of organized crime in the country is extremely high, while citizens’ safety is “at an unprecedented low.” The rising number of murders was also mentioned as a reason to support the decision.
Prime Minister Eduardo Arana announced that the government will comply with Congress’s decision.
Dina Boluarte did not attend the session. She had served as President of Peru since December 2022.
Following the impeachment decision, Speaker of Parliament José Jeri was appointed as the new president. The 38-year-old politician had led Congress since July.
At the end of September, mass protests took place across Peru. Citizens voiced anger not only at the government’s inability to fight crime but also at the inefficiency of pension reform and anti-corruption measures.
Thus, political instability in Peru has deepened once again — the new president now faces the difficult task of restoring safety and public trust.
