A giant floating city will be built in Japan in 2030

Japan put forward another innovative idea in the field of engineering and architecture. The country's N-Ark company presented a project to build a "floating future city" in the summer of 2023. Its name is Dogen City. This idea will radically change not only technical capabilities, but also perceptions of a new format of human life, local publications wrote.

Main features of the city of Dōgen

The new project will look like a perfect 4-kilometer circle from above. This is no coincidence - engineers say that such a shape ensures stability during strong storms, tsunamis, or other natural disasters. Thus, the city will function not only as a convenient ecosystem for humans, but also as an environmentally resilient ecosystem.

The architects proposed to conditionally divide the city into three main areas:

Habitat ring - the main part of the territory where residential, commercial, and recreational areas are located;

Underwater center - designed for data processing and research laboratories, which is naturally cooled by seawater;

The artificial bay is an area of floating islands within a circular structure, which forms the visual and functional center of the city.

City capabilities and population needs

Project engineers note that Dogen can accommodate 10,000 permanent residents and up to 30,000 guests annually. There will be schools, offices, hospitals, hotels, stadiums, parks, and even a space for launching and landing rockets.

According to the company's calculations, the city's population consumes approximately 2 million liters of water annually, consumes 7,000 tons of food, and uses over 22 million kilowatt-hours of electricity. Providing these resources could be a big problem, but engineers plan to get energy from renewable sources - the sun, wind, and sea waves.

When will the construction begin?

The project is expected to enter the practical phase in 2030. A specific location for the city's construction has not yet been chosen, but the Japanese government and private investors have expressed interest in implementing this idea in the coming years.
