In Italy, a situation that shocked the whole country was exposed. A 70-year-old man living in Vichensa has been illegally receiving benefits from the state for nearly 50 years, pretending to be blind, ANSA news agency reported.
According to reports, he has been on the "blind list" since 1972 and has earned more than one million euros through pensions and social assistance. This situation was revealed during special investigations conducted by the Financial Guard.
During the observation, it was noted that the man behaved like a completely healthy person in his daily life. He picked out products in the markets, paid in cash, drove independently on the road, and even worked with sharp tools in the park.
Law enforcement agencies stated that these actions are impossible for a completely blind person. Investigators believe the man has been deceiving the state for half a century by falsifying medical documents and avoiding re-examinations.
Currently, a criminal case has been initiated against him under the article "financial fraud." The investigation is investigating how he remained out of control for so many years and who helped him.
Italian media called the incident "the longest-lasting social fraud of the century." Experts say that this situation once again demonstrated the need to strengthen control mechanisms in the social benefit system.
