Scientists at InventWood in the USA have successfully processed wood using a new technology, making it ten times stronger and six times lighter than steel, InventWood reports. The company has also started commercial production of this material.
The scientific work was carried out under the guidance of Professor Lyanbin Hu of Yale University. He first conducted experiments on turning wood into a transparent material, but later set the main goal - to make wood stronger than steel. In his opinion, the creation of environmentally friendly and affordable construction solutions based on natural materials opens a new direction for humanity.
According to the new method, the wood is first fired in a special chemical solution, then firmly pressed through a hot press. In this process, the wood cells condense, and its internal structure completely changes. As a result, it becomes more durable, flexible, and long-lasting than ordinary metals.
InventWood CEO Alex Lau stated that this could be a real revolution in the superwood construction industry. Its lightness significantly reduces the weight of buildings, which allows for the construction of more durable structures in areas with high seismic risk. At the same time, such technology significantly reduces construction costs.
Currently, super wood is more expensive than conventional wood, but compared to steel production, this method produces 90% fewer carbon emissions. Scientists consider this a great achievement from an ecological point of view, since the steel industry is one of the largest sources of pollution in the world.
The company's long-term plan is to bring superwood to a level where it can compete with steel. Initially, it is expected to be used in the facade parts of buildings, floors, and interior decoration. Later, it can be widely used in furniture, wall structures, and even in the construction of entire buildings.
