A historic meeting took place in Moscow between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syria’s interim leader Ahmad al-Sharaa. This was their first dialogue, lasting two and a half hours. During the talks, the two sides discussed long-standing cooperation, the prospects for Syria’s reconstruction, and Russia’s role in shaping the country’s new future.
Syrian leader Ahmad al-Sharaa praised Russia’s assistance in forming new political and economic structures. He emphasized that Moscow has always been a strategic ally for Damascus and that their partnership is expected to strengthen further.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to answer journalists’ questions about whether Putin and al-Sharaa discussed the fate of Bashar al-Assad. He stated that, for now, no official comments would be made regarding Assad’s future.
It should be noted that in December, Russia granted asylum to the ousted Syrian president Bashar al-Assad and his family. According to Germany’s Zeit newspaper, Assad currently lives with his family in Moscow City and reportedly spends much of his time playing video games.
Analysts believe that this meeting signals the consolidation of a new political order in Syria and the growing influence of Moscow. While the Kremlin remains silent about Assad, Russia continues to strengthen its position as a dominant player in the region.
Thus, the meeting between Putin and al-Sharaa is seen as a major turning point in Syria’s new political direction, with Assad staying out of the spotlight but still remaining under close global watch.
