The Etimesgut military airfield, located in Ankara, the capital of Turkey, is soon being transformed into a special VIP airport for the country's leaders and foreign delegations, the publication "Sözcü" reported.
According to reports, the airport reconstruction project is very large-scale and will meet modern international requirements. The runway will be extended to 3000 meters, and its width will be increased to 60 meters. At the same time, the construction of two large platforms, capable of accommodating 50 aircraft simultaneously, is planned.
The airport mainly serves the visits of presidents, prime ministers, and high-ranking guests. Here, the Hall of Veterans and the State Guest House with a total area of 2,400 square meters are being built, which are intended for special official delegations and international summits.
The management of the facility will be transferred to the Turkish State Airport Authority, but the ownership rights will remain with the General Staff. The reconstruction work is planned to be completed by July 2026. This date coincides with a significant event in Turkish history - the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Türkkuşu Planör School. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk personally participated in the opening of this school in the last century.
The Etimesgut airfield has historically been one of the main bases of the Turkish Air Force, and has also served as a training and logistics center. Now, almost a century later, it has regained its strategic significance. The new VIP airport is expected to further strengthen the diplomatic and protocol potential of the Turkish capital and transform the country into one of the most important political centers on the international stage.
