A cholera epidemic is spreading widely across the African continent, reported Africa CDC.
Since the beginning of 2025, the infection has been detected in 23 countries. According to official data, more than 297,000 people have been infected, and about 7,000 patients have died, bringing the mortality rate to 2.3 percent.
The most severe situation is observed in Angola and Burundi. Authorities note that poor sanitation systems and a shortage of clean drinking water in these countries are worsening the crisis.
In South Sudan, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the number of cases has slightly decreased in recent weeks, but these countries remain in the high-risk group. Experts warn that heavy rains may further expand the epidemic by the end of the year.
Cholera is an intestinal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, mainly transmitted through contaminated water or food.
Globally, over 518,000 cases have been recorded in 32 countries, with more than 6,500 deaths reported.
Doctors urge the public to strictly follow hygiene rules, use only clean drinking water, and avoid suspicious food products. Health authorities are advised to strengthen rapid response measures against the epidemic.
