Putin visits India: oil and defense cooperation

Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in India for a two-day official visit. In Delhi, he was warmly welcomed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During the visit, agreements are expected to be signed to strengthen economic and strategic cooperation between the two countries.

India is one of the main buyers of Russian oil. Previously, Russia’s share in India’s oil imports was 2.5%, now it is 35%. This is linked to Moscow’s limited options and the discounts on oil prices.

Defense cooperation continues. India’s armed forces largely rely on Russian equipment, including Sukhoi-30 fighter jets and S-400 air defense systems. In the future, the purchase of S-500 systems and Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets is planned.

Additionally, Modi aims to diversify trade and economic relations with Russia. Expanding cooperation beyond oil and defense will help India maintain strategic autonomy and continue ties with the West.
