After the Taliban came to power, former Afghan soldiers who moved to the United Kingdom want to join the British army. Afghan Major Nur Aziz Ahmadzai said he and his former colleagues have asked to be accepted into service.
Nur joined a special police unit at 16, later worked as an interpreter for British forces, and then moved to Afghanistan’s special forces. He studied for two and a half years at a military academy in the UK and later became deputy commander of a special counter-terrorism unit.
Since August 2021, Nur has been living in the UK. He and other Afghans were evacuated due to threats to their lives. They are currently given temporary housing, but most remain homeless.
Only those with citizenship can apply to the British army, which requires at least five years of residence in the UK. At the same time, Nur and other former soldiers want to use their experience in the British armed forces, and talks on this matter are ongoing.
