
Bangladesh’s first female prime minister Khaleda Zia has died at the age of 80. This was announced by her party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. The politician passed away after a long and serious illness. Doctors said she suffered from liver cirrhosis, diabetes and heart-related problems.
Khaleda Zia won the 1991 election and became the first female prime minister in the country’s history. She spent many years in political rivalry with Sheikh Hasina, and this confrontation played an important role in Bangladesh’s politics. The struggle between the two leaders had a strong impact on the country’s political life.
During her time as prime minister, Khaleda Zia carried out important reforms in state governance. She introduced a parliamentary system, improved conditions for foreign investment and made primary education free and compulsory. At the same time, her second term was also marked by corruption allegations.
In recent years, Khaleda Zia stayed away from politics due to worsening health. She spent several years in prison and under house arrest and was released in 2024. Her death marks the end of an important period in Bangladesh’s political history.
