A magnitude 6.2 earthquake hit the western Chugoku region of Japan. The earthquake started in the eastern part of Shimane Prefecture. The Meteorological Agency said there was no risk of a tsunami.
Chugoku Electric Power, which operates the Shimane Nuclear Power Station, said operations at Unit 2 continue as usual. The Nuclear Regulation Authority also reported no problems following the quake.
The earthquake reached upper-5 on Japan’s 1-7 seismic intensity scale. At this level, movement is difficult for people. Japan is one of the world’s most seismically active areas, accounting for about one-fifth of earthquakes of magnitude 6 or higher.
After the quake, Shinkansen train services between Shin-Osaka and Hakata were temporarily suspended. There are no reports of injuries or serious damage so far.
