Bird flu spreads on farms in India

India reported 11 outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu last month on farms in the southern state of Kerala, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) said.

The Paris office of WOAH, citing Indian authorities, said the virus caused the death of 54,100 birds, mostly ducks. In addition, 30,289 birds were culled as a precaution.

The outbreaks were detected from December 9 and confirmed on December 22. These were the first cases reported among poultry in India since May.

The event has raised concerns for the government and the poultry industry, as bird flu has spread worldwide, affecting food supply and prices, and increasing the risk of human transmission.
