Flash floods in Indonesia: 14 killed

A sudden flash flood hit the island of Siau in Indonesia’s North Sulawesi region due to heavy rain. At least 14 people were killed, and four remain missing. Local rescue agency spokesperson Nuriadin Gumeleng said 18 people were injured.
Sixteen specialists have been deployed for rescue operations, continuing the search for missing people. Local roads remain blocked by rocks, mud, and debris, making transportation difficult. Evacuation efforts have been carried out to ensure the safety of residents.
The floods damaged hundreds of homes and government buildings. North Sulawesi Governor Yulius Selvanus said excavators were deployed to clear the roads. There is currently no new information on whether the number of casualties or missing persons has increased.
According to the meteorological agency, the floods occurred at the peak of the rainy season on Sulawesi island. Heavy rains are expected at the beginning of the year on the islands of Java, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua, increasing the risk of further flooding.
