Italy asked Trump to review the Peace Council format

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni suggested to U.S. President Donald Trump that the structure of the newly established Peace Council be reviewed. The international body is said to be aimed at securing the future of the Gaza Strip. This was reported by podrobno.uz. reports .
At a joint press conference in Rome on January 24 with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the parties stressed that the Council’s current governance model contradicts the constitutional norms of their countries. The main obstacle for Rome and Berlin is the Council charter’s “constitutional incompatibility” with European legislation.
In Meloni’s and Merz’s view, the current decision-making mechanism implies transferring national sovereignty in favor of an external body. They said this cannot be accepted without constitutional amendments and demanded reforms to make the structure more inclusive and ensure genuine equality for all participants.
Despite the legal disagreements, Meloni urged her European Union counterparts to avoid confrontation with Washington. Her approach, described as “constructive pragmatism,” aims to maintain dialogue with the White House and prevent Europe from being sidelined in shaping the new global order.
Italy’s position was also supported by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who said relations with the Trump administration should be firm but not escalatory.
The Peace Council was officially established on January 22 on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos. The structure, which U.S. media have mentioned as a potential alternative to the UN, gained international organization status after leaders and representatives of 19 countries signed its charter.
Uzbekistan was also among the founding states. Presidential adviser Abdulaziz Kamilov said the decision was driven by national interests and a desire to help resolve the Gaza conflict through peaceful means.
