Former South Korean First Lady sentenced to 20 months in prison

A high-profile case has concluded in South Korea: former First Lady Kim Jong-hee was found guilty in a corruption case and sentenced to 20 months (1 year and 8 months) in prison. The verdict has not yet entered into legal force - the defense has the right to appeal.
According to court materials, it was concluded that Kim Jong-hee illegally received valuable gifts - including diamond jewelry and luxury accessories - from representatives of the "Unification Church" in exchange for a certain political favor. Therefore, he was punished, and it is said that the illegally obtained items will be confiscated.
However, in the second part of the case, the court was cautious: Ms. Kim was acquitted due to a lack of evidence on certain charges, such as stock manipulation and violation of the laws of political financing. That is, not "for all equally" - part of it was approved, part not.
Kim was arrested in August 2025. Her diamond jewelry from the "Church of Unity" played a key role in this. Kim avoided responsibility for 5 years "despite the rains of accusations" due to her status as First Lady.
This incident is not isolated: Kim Gon Hi's husband - former president Yoon Suk Yeol - was also prosecuted in cases related to martial law in December 2024 and reportedly received a 5-year prison sentence within the framework of court decisions of January 16, 2026. He is awaiting decisions on even more serious charges.
The conclusion is simple: "My position in Seoul is not a waistcoat." Now the main question is how much the decision changes in appeals and what waves this verdict creates on the political stage.
