In Japan, a tuna fish fetches a record $3.2 million

Japan’s Kiyomura Corp. entered the Guinness World Records after paying 510.3 million yen, or about 3.2 million dollars, for a bluefin tuna at the first auction of 2026.
The company, which operates the Sushizanmai restaurant chain, won the bidding at the Tokyo market, Kyodo reported. Inform.kz reported.
The 243-kilogram fish was caught off the coast of Aomori prefecture. The auction took place on January 5 at the Toyosu market in Tokyo.
The purchased tuna was cut up at the chain’s main restaurant in the Tsukiji district and served to customers across Japan.
Kiyoshi Kimura, president of Kiyomura, received a Guinness certificate on April 20. According to the leader, the company intends to continue offering its customers products of the highest quality.
This is the company’s second world record. In 2013, Kiyomura also set a record by buying a fish for 155.4 million yen at the year’s first auction.
According to Tokyo authorities, the current price was the highest recorded since 1999.
In Japan, bidding a high price at the first auction of the year is considered a good omen and a distinctive way to gain attention. Watching this process at the Toyosu market has become a popular entertainment attraction for many tourists.
