Ivan Aivazovsky's 1887 painting The Survivors was sold at Sotheby's auction for £4.188 million. The price became a new world auction record for the artist's works. This was reported by Artprice.
The portal notes that the plot of "The Survivors" can be compared to Aivazovsky's "The Ninth Wave," written in 1850. In the same year, the painting was purchased by Emperor Nicholas I for the imperial collection. Both paintings depict the consequences of the storm at sea.
By the 1870s, when the artist began painting "The Survivors," Aivazovsky had already mastered the technique of marine landscapes. By this time, he had also created "Stormy Seas" and "Rainbow." However, this record-breaking painting remains the largest among the artist's similar works. When sold at the Sotheby's auction in New York in April 2004, it was recognized as Ivan Aivazovsky's largest canvas.
