Uzbekistan may introduce an excise tax on potato chips starting in 2026. This is stated in the draft Budget Message for 2026-2028, submitted by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
According to the document, from April 1, 2026, an excise tax of 15,000 soums may be levied for every kilogram of ready-to-consume potato chips.
This tax is paid by legal entities and importers producing chips in the territory of Uzbekistan. That is, this requirement applies equally to chips products in both domestic and foreign markets.
As noted in the budget message, the proposal was developed on the basis of the World Health Organization's measures to combat overweight, as well as the recommendations of the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan on supporting healthy nutrition.
Also, before implementing this measure, the experience of other countries was studied. Tax revenues can be directed to healthcare and preventive work.
