Myanmar government proposes life imprisonment for crypto scammers

Myanmar's military government has announced a new draft law aimed at combating online fraud. The document provides for extremely strict measures against crimes involving cryptocurrencies and illegal scam centers. Officials state that this law is necessary to curb cybercrimes that threaten the country's sovereignty and stability. This is reported by Cointelegraph.com reports .

According to the new draft law, individuals found guilty of digital currency fraud could face sentences ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment, or even the death penalty. Specifically, the death penalty is set for leaders of scam centers that cause the death of individuals subjected to forced labor or exploitation.

Scam centers, widespread in Southeast Asia, are becoming a serious global problem. International organizations and the US government have also intensified the fight against cybercrime in these regions. In particular, according to an FBI report, Americans lost more than $11 billion due to crypto scams in 2025.

The Myanmar government is expected to hold a meeting in the first week of June to review this draft law. Meanwhile, special task forces under the US Department of Justice continue to combat organized criminal groups in Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar.
