With the arrival of summer, significant changes are expected in the prices of basic food products in the market. According to Nikita Chaplin, a member of the Budget and Taxes Committee of the State Duma of Russia, starting from June 2024, there may be a decrease in the prices of vegetables, dairy products, and eggs. This is explained by the seasonal harvest and the increase in supply.
According to Chaplin, the price drop for vegetables will begin primarily with potatoes, tomatoes, and cucumbers. That is, thanks to the new harvest, potatoes may become 1–2% cheaper. In addition, the volume of locally grown tomatoes and cucumbers, which started being delivered to the domestic market in May, will continue to grow in June, leading to a decrease in their production costs.
From the second half of June, prices for products like onions and carrots may also decrease. The main reason will be the arrival of both imported goods and the full local harvest to the market. At the same time, due to the seasonal growth in supply, dairy products and eggs may become approximately 2% cheaper.
According to Chaplin, no significant changes are expected in the prices of chicken meat, fish, and butter. These products are shaped by long-term market trends and are less affected by seasonal factors.
Also, the prices of berries and fruits may gradually decrease in June. In particular, due to the start of harvesting in the middle of the month, prices for strawberries and apples may fall by 5–10%. However, in the early days of the month, due to the “transition period” between imports and local deliveries, some prices may remain high.
In addition, as noted by Dmitry Belousov, head of the Center for Macroeconomic Analysis, due to weather conditions, prices for some fruits and vegetables may rise if the harvest decreases. However, he emphasized that no problems are expected with the prices of non-food goods.
In conclusion: the month of June may offer consumers an opportunity to purchase vegetables and dairy products at relatively lower prices. However, the stability or decline in prices depends on many factors — weather, import volumes, and the supply-demand balance in the domestic market. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
