At the European Respiratory Society (ERS) congress in Amsterdam, scientists from the University of Leicester in Great Britain presented the results of their research on a simple way to protect themselves from air pollution.
Experts analyzed data from nearly 200,000 participants of the UK Biobank and concluded: if a person consumes at least four or more fresh fruits per day, the lungs can be partially protected from the effects of harmful airborne particles.
The study noted that this effect was especially pronounced in women. Because they have established more fruit consumption. Since men consumed fewer fruits on average, the protective effect was not observed as strongly.
Scientists explain this situation by the high content of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances in fruits. They believe that these compounds partially reduce the negative impact of air pollution.
At the same time, scientists emphasize that healthy eating cannot fully replace environmental measures. However, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can serve as an additional means of protection, especially for those living in large cities.
Interestingly, scientists also specifically addressed mango consumption, stating that consuming this fruit daily can reduce the risk of diabetes despite its high sugar content.
