Athelstan became England’s first king 1,100 years ago. He united several kingdoms and created a single state.
In 924, after his father’s death, Athelstan took the throne and soon added Northumbria to his realm. In 937, he won the Battle of Brunanburh against the Vikings and the Scots.
During Athelstan’s reign, England was home to different peoples, and he strengthened ties with European states. Governance also became more stable under his rule.
Although his name was rarely mentioned after his death, the idea of the state he created survived. Today’s royal ceremonies still preserve traditions dating back to Athelstan’s time.
