Sharp income disparity: Tashkent leads while regions lag behind

According to the results of the first quarter of 2026, the total income of the population of Uzbekistan reached 263.2 trillion soums. Despite a real growth of 7.8 percent, the issue of economic inequality remains pressing. According to the Statistics Agency, the average per capita income across the country was 6.9 million soums, but the gap between the capital and the regions is very large.

In particular, income levels in Tashkent are sharply higher, reaching an average of 19.1 million soums. This figure is nearly four times higher than the lowest income recorded in the Namangan region, which stands at 4.6 million soums. This once again highlights how deep the economic imbalance between the regions is.

An analysis of income sources shows that the majority of the population's well-being still stems from labor activities, accounting for 60.7 percent. At the same time, remittances from abroad play a significant role, making up 27.5 percent of total income.

Interestingly, the share of the self-employed has reached 29.8 percent, which is approaching the share of the formally employed population (30.9 percent). This situation indicates that the share of the informal sector in the economy remains high.

In some regions, dependence on external labor migration is significant. For example, in the Andijan region, 31.2 percent of the population's income comes from transfers.

At the same time, economic growth rates are not uniform across all regions. Growth in the Khorezm region stood at 2.8 percent, and in the Fergana region at 2.9 percent, remaining well below the national average.

In short, while total incomes in the country are growing, factors such as regional disparities, the high share of the informal sector, and dependence on migration remain serious issues for economic stability and balanced development.
