Uzbekistan will play Venezuela in Tashkent

Uzbekistan will continue its FIFA Series 2026 campaign with a much sterner challenge when Fabio Cannavaro’s side meets Venezuela on March 30 in Tashkent. The hosts opened the new FIFA tournament in impressive style by defeating Gabon 3-1, a result that strengthened confidence around the national team and underlined the progress Uzbekistan has made ahead of the next major international cycle.

The second match now carries greater intrigue because Venezuela also began the tournament with a convincing victory. The South American side beat Trinidad and Tobago 4-1 in its opening game in Tashkent, showing attacking sharpness and the ability to punish mistakes quickly. That result set up an attractive meeting between two teams that both started strongly and now have a chance to measure themselves against more serious opposition.

An additional layer of interest comes from the latest FIFA rankings. Uzbekistan climbed two places to move into 50th position, a spot previously occupied by Venezuela. After the latest update, Venezuela also rose and now sits 49th. The two teams are therefore separated by only one place, which reflects how balanced this contest may be on paper and adds further weight to a match that already looked one of the headline fixtures of the tournament.

Although Venezuela will not take part in the 2026 World Cup, the team showed enough during qualification to earn respect. It narrowly missed out on the next stage and managed notable draws against both Argentina and Brazil, results that stood out as major surprises in the South American campaign. At the same time, inconsistency remains a major concern. Venezuela lost its last three matches in a row, and that poor run eventually led to the departure of head coach Fernando Batista.

Oswaldo Vizcarrondo first took charge on an interim basis and was then confirmed as the team’s permanent head coach. His appointment signals a transitional period for Venezuela, with expectations that the side will gradually move toward more pressing, more control of possession and a more combination-based approach. That tactical shift may take time, however, and the team still appears more comfortable when attacking quickly into space than when building patiently against an organized defense.

In squad value and individual reputation, Venezuela has enough quality to trouble any opponent at this level. The team is valued at around 71 million euros, with Jon Aramburu considered its most expensive player. Jefferson Savarino and Cristian Casseres also provide important quality, while 36-year-old Salomon Rondon remains the leading attacking figure and the main reference point up front. His experience, positioning and finishing ability make him the obvious player Uzbekistan must monitor closely.

From a tactical standpoint, Venezuela looks especially dangerous in fast counterattacks, wing play and set-piece situations. Those strengths could pose real problems if Uzbekistan loses control of the tempo or leaves too much room in wide areas. On the other hand, Venezuela is not considered as convincing in positional play, and its goalkeeping unit is not viewed as among the strongest parts of the squad. That could give Uzbekistan clear areas to target.

For Cannavaro’s team, patience and game management may be decisive. Uzbekistan is likely to benefit from stretching the defense, using the full width of the pitch and attacking the spaces between Venezuela’s lines. Wide combinations and well-timed deliveries could become a productive route, particularly if the hosts can force the visitors to defend deeper than they prefer. Controlling transitions will be just as important, because Venezuela can turn defensive recoveries into dangerous attacks very quickly.

The recent head-to-head record also suggests a competitive match. Uzbekistan and Venezuela met in 2023, and that game ended in a 1-1 draw. With both teams now entering this meeting after emphatic wins, another tight contest appears likely, though Uzbekistan will hope home support and stronger momentum can make the difference. The match between Uzbekistan and Venezuela is scheduled to kick off at 7:00 p.m. Tashkent time on March 30.
