Microsoft Rethinks Green Energy Goals Due to AI Data Centers

Microsoft is rapidly expanding its data centers to advance AI technologies. It is reported that this process may hinder the company from achieving its ambitious environmental goals. According to Bloomberg, the company is internally discussing the possibility of revising its commitment to match 100% of its hourly energy consumption with carbon-free energy sources by 2030. This is reported by Techcrunch.com reports .

Currently, Microsoft aims to track its energy consumption on an hourly basis and match it with renewable sources. However, the growth of AI infrastructure is putting significant pressure on power grids. Unlike annual goals, hourly metrics are much stricter and require the company to monitor energy supply in real time.

As data centers grow in size, tech giants like Microsoft are being forced to return to traditional energy sources such as natural gas. For instance, the company recently announced a project to build a large natural gas power plant in West Texas. This move may contradict the company's previously promoted strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions.

Microsoft representatives declined to comment on internal discussions but emphasized that the company remains committed to maintaining an annual energy balance. If the company abandons its hourly clean energy goal, it could seriously impact its environmental reputation and its promises regarding sustainable development.
