AI used to reconstruct voices of deceased pilots

The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) was forced to temporarily restrict access to its open data system. This follows the reconstruction and online circulation of voices of pilots who died in a UPS cargo plane crash last year, using artificial intelligence. This is reported by Techcrunch.com reporting states.

Under federal law, the NTSB is prohibited from releasing cockpit audio recordings among its investigation materials. However, the documents for this flight included a spectrogram file of the audio recorder. A spectrogram mathematically converts sound signals, including low and high frequencies, into an image.

Popular YouTuber Scott Manley noted on his X page that it was possible to reconstruct audio based on the megabytes of data in this image. Shortly after, users generated the cockpit recordings of UPS flight 2976 using AI, based on the spectrogram and open-source transcripts.

According to reports, modern AI tools such as Codex were used in this process. The NTSB restored system access on Friday, but 42 investigation cases, including documents related to the Louisville crash, remain closed for review.
