Apple Music to Start Labeling AI-Generated Tracks

As an important step toward greater transparency in the digital music world, Apple is preparing to introduce a system for marking AI-generated compositions with special labels on its Apple Music streaming service. The Hollywood Reporter, citing an official letter Apple sent to its music industry partners, reports that the new policy could take effect as early as 2026. Ixbt.com reports this.
The technology giant is currently keeping the exact launch date and technical oversight rules for the project confidential. Nevertheless, it has become clear that the service will use the existing AI Transparency Tags mechanism, which was presented to music labels and distributors in March this year. Under the mechanism, content providers will be required to indicate the relevant labels if AI technologies were used significantly in creating a work.
Criteria for Monitoring AI Content
According to Apple’s explanations, content requiring an AI label is defined as “material created primarily with the help of a generative AI service.” This makes it possible to clearly define the boundaries between copyright and technological intervention in the music market. However, the distributed letter suggests that Apple Music does not plan to automatically subject every uploaded composition to a special review. The responsibility for disclosing complete information about a work and labeling it correctly will rest directly with music labels and distributors.
Industry Changes and Broader Trends
According to ixbt.com, Apple’s decision comes in response to new policies and requirements gaining momentum across the music industry. In particular, Spotify had previously updated its policy to label performers created with the help of AI on its platform and exclude such artists from editorial and algorithmic recommendation lists. These changes and new rules reflect serious concerns across the music industry. Experts say they are worried about an increase in fraud involving automatically generated AI content, as well as the artificial inflation of play counts through manipulation, commonly known as streaming fraud.
