Luxury smartphone manufacturer Vertu introduced a new foldable phone on Thursday, featuring corporate software and an AI agent designed to coordinate workflows. Named Alphafold, the device is primarily aimed at executives who manage business operations and stay connected while on the move. The base version, crafted from calf leather, starts at $6,880, while premium models adorned with alligator leather, 18-karat gold, and natural diamonds can reach up to $46,800. The Alphafold device is equipped with the Hermes Agent system, based on the open-source Hermes project from Nous Research. This agent connects to enterprise systems such as ERP and CRM, allowing it to perform tasks like approvals, scheduling, sales monitoring, and travel arrangements via natural language commands. It also has the capability to route requests between multiple AI models, including OpenAI’s GPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google’s Gemini.
Vertu CEO Molly Ma noted that while AI features from major manufacturers are primarily focused on consumer tools like image editing, Alphafold emphasizes complex corporate workflows. To ensure security, the device features a dedicated A5 chip that stores biometric data and confidential corporate information separately from the main operating system. Business data is processed on-device, and requests sent to external AI models are anonymized.
Technically, the Alphafold is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor, featuring an 8.05-inch main screen and a 6.53-inch external display. The device includes a 6,500 mAh battery, satellite connectivity, and a triple 50-megapixel camera system. According to Vertu, the titanium and carbon fiber folding mechanism can withstand 650,000 folds. This marks the brand's latest attempt to regain its position in the smartphone market in the post-iPhone era.
