AI Centers Have Become an Unexpected Threat to Power Grids

A minor accident near Washington has demonstrated just how serious of a threat artificial intelligence and data centers can pose to modern energy systems. What should have been fixed in seconds under normal conditions turned into a crisis lasting over ten minutes due to data centers simultaneously disconnecting from the grid, reports Techcrunch.com reports .
According to reports by TechCrunch and Reuters, a power line failure in Northern Virginia caused data centers consuming over 3 GW of power to disconnect from the grid almost simultaneously. This event triggered a sharp voltage spike in the system of PJM, the largest grid operator in the U.S. Flickering lights were observed across regions ranging from New Jersey to Illinois as a result of the incident, but fortunately, mass blackouts did not occur.
From a minor glitch to a major crisis
Northern Virginia is home to the highest concentration of data centers in the world. According to data from startup Ting Labs, as soon as the grid disruption was sensed, all centers automatically switched to backup power sources. As a result, a 3.1 GW load vanished from the grid in just 30 seconds. Before the energy system could compensate for this loss, additional capacities also disconnected, bringing the total surplus energy to 3.49 gigawatts.Experts explain that the electrical grid must operate in a perfect balance between supply and demand. If this balance is disrupted, voltage drops or, conversely, spikes sharply. Data centers make decisions in fractions of a second to protect their equipment and disconnect from the grid. This can trigger a chain reaction and disrupt the power infrastructure of an entire region.
Future risks and solutions
ON.Energy CTO Ricardo de Azevedo called this incident a "canary in the coal mine" (a sign of impending danger). According to him, as AI technologies develop, the number of such high-load facilities is growing, and their interaction with the grid is becoming increasingly complex. If data centers do not learn to manage such disruptions more smoothly, even larger accidents are bound to happen in the future.Energy industry experts are currently proposing the introduction of new standards for data centers. These may include:
- Implementing the grid disconnection process gradually;
- Adapting backup systems to support grid stability;
- Introducing AI-powered smart load management systems.
