Indian Electric Scooter Startup River Raises $120 Million

Indian electric vehicle manufacturer River, a promising startup, has announced that it raised $120 million for its next phase of growth. According to TechCrunch, the Series C funding round was led by major Indian investors Elev8 Venture Partners and Claypond Capital. TechCrunch.com reports this.

The funding round also included Singularity AMC, Anicut Capital, 360 ONE Asset, JIF Capital and HDFC AMC. Meanwhile, existing investors Yamaha Motor, Al-Futtaim Group and Mitsui continued to support the project. According to company founder and CEO Aravind Mani, a small portion of the funds—specifically 10–12%—came from venture debt, while the remainder was directed into direct equity capital.

Competition in the Electric Scooter Market

Founded in 2021, River is becoming one of the leading players in India’s rapidly expanding electric two-wheeler market. The company competes with newer startups such as Ather Energy and Ola Electric, as well as traditional automotive giants including Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor. The sector is currently a key driver of electric vehicle adoption in India.

Unlike most of its competitors, River has built its business around a single model: the Indie electric moped, introduced in 2023. According to the startup, it currently sells an average of 6,000 vehicles per month through more than 75 dealerships across India. Total sales have now surpassed 50,000 units.

Plans to Expand Production Capacity

According to the founder, rather than positioning the Indie model across numerous consumer segments, the company has focused on presenting it as a vehicle for everyday use and utilitarian tasks. The biggest achievement over the past year has been scaling production. Whereas the company previously assembled just 20 vehicles per day, that figure has now reached 300 per day.

Priced at 155,000 rupees, the Indie moped can travel approximately 99 miles on a single charge. Its core customers are self-employed people between the ages of 28 and 35. Driven by current sales performance, River’s revenue grew by 330% in the last fiscal year, while monthly revenue reached nearly 1 billion rupees.

With the newly raised $120 million, the startup’s total funding has reached $144 million. River plans to achieve full operating profitability once monthly production reaches between 20,000 and 25,000 units. The company aims to reach this milestone by 2028–2029, while its gross profit margin is expected to improve gradually as production increases.
