Cannavaro Addresses the Media: “It’s Easy to Talk in Front of a Camera…”

Uzbekistan national team head coach Fabio Cannavaro made a direct appeal to journalists at the end of the press conference. The Italian coach said he was unhappy with some reports about his work and stressed that relations should be based on mutual respect.

Cannavaro particularly rejected claims that he had distanced himself from the team and immediately left for Italy to rest after the World Cup. He said that some of the journalists who had criticized him most did not attend the press conference or ask their questions directly.

Cannavaro began his appeal with the concept most important in the relationship between a journalist and a coach: respect.

“In my opinion, respect is the most important thing. I respect you as journalists, and I expect the same respect from you.”

The head coach in Uzbekistan said he was working tirelessly, with his main goal being to help the players and develop the national team.

At the same time, he said that some events had recently been reported without being fully examined or without asking for the coach’s position.

“I am working tirelessly here and want to help the players. Nevertheless, a great deal of incorrect information is being spread among journalists.”

Cannavaro did not list the reports he was referring to one by one. However, questions about his salary, his trip to Italy, his work with the team and his plans after the World Cup formed the main part of the press conference discussion.

The Italian coach said he was not opposed to criticism itself, but expected questions to be asked openly and directly.

According to him, some of the journalists who expressed the strongest opinions on social media or in broadcasts did not attend the press conference.

“The journalists who talk the most could not find the strength to come to the press conference. Because it is very easy to sit in front of a camera and talk. But asking me those questions here—that is not for everyone.”

These words became the most heated part of the press conference. Cannavaro did not demand that journalists stop criticizing him; he demanded that they ask him questions and hear his answers.

The coach’s main objection was not the existence of negative opinions, but the fact that some conclusions about him were being circulated without hearing his position.

Response to reports that he went to Italy

Cannavaro once again rejected claims that he had abandoned the national team after the World Cup.

“I did not run away anywhere. I stayed with the national team until the end of the World Cup. We worked with the team and held training camps for four months.”

He explained that the coaching staff had carried out a lengthy preparation process before the World Cup. At a previous official press conference, Cannavaro had also said that the staff regularly monitored the players and worked to improve the team’s physical condition.

The coach said that he only went home to spend time with his family after the World Cup ended. He explained the situation with a joke, saying that his wife had also complained because he had spent so long at work.

“So, as a joke, I can say that my wife complained about it too. That is why I needed to spend at least one month at home.”

According to Cannavaro, this break did not mean that he had given up on the Uzbekistan national team or decided to terminate his contract.

The Door Remains Open to Criticism

During the press conference, Cannavaro answered journalists’ questions and stressed that suggestions and objections concerning his work could be conveyed through the Uzbekistan Football Association.

“I think I answered all the questions. If you have more questions or suggestions, you can contact the UFA.”

The coach apologized for the conference running long. However, its extended duration also showed how many questions had built up and how much discussion had grown around the national team.

After the results at the World Cup, it is natural for the head coach’s decisions, player selection, working methods and contract to remain at the center of public attention.
