The "Bird of the Year" that will be chosen as a symbol for next year in Tajikistan has been determined - the desert partridge has been declared the main bird of 2026 to draw attention to climate change and problems in desert ecosystems. This was reported by the publication "Asia-Plus."
In the annual vote held at the National Academy of Sciences, ecologists emphasized the need to preserve the population of the unique fauna of the country's desert zones and strengthen social protection against it as the main reason for choosing this species.
The desert partridge (called chil or kabki zirak in Tajik) belongs to the pheasant family and is considered a naturally shy and innocent bird. Although widespread in the arid regions of Central Asia, in Tajikistan it is rare only in the southern and western desert and semi-desert zones. The number was not calculated precisely, as the monitoring system was not officially established. However, ornithologists note that the number is steadily decreasing year by year.
The main reasons for the decline in the number of species are the loss of the natural range, uncontrolled reproduction of plants, the expansion of agricultural areas, and the lack of special scientific observation programs. Therefore, the inclusion of the desert partridge in national nature conservation initiatives is considered an important step.
What does the bird look like?
The desert partridge is small and compact. Its length is 30-35 centimeters, and its weight is usually around 300-450 grams. The color is grayish-brown, giving a perfect camouflage in a desert environment. The soft stripes on the head distinguish it from other partridges.
The bird prefers running to flying - it is known for hiding among rocks and bushes when danger is felt. His voice consists of a soft, pleasant, warm sound that is easy to hear in the morning.
Where does he live?
In Tajikistan, the desert partridge is mainly found on plains, foothills, and rocky plateaus. It prefers sparse shrubs, dry grass, and relatively "quiet" landscapes. Dense thickets and damp ground are not suitable for it. Areas less susceptible to human impact are considered its main habitat.
Why was it the bird of 2026?
The Academy of Sciences highlighted several main reasons indicated by ecologists:
-desert ecosystems are home to the least studied and rapidly endangered species,
-Climate change has a strong impact on arid regions, worsening the living conditions of species,
- scientific monitoring programs for the desert partridge have not yet been established,
- low awareness of desert fauna among the population.
Therefore, the choice of the desert partridge as the "Bird of the Year" serves to draw public attention to these problems.
