On February 2, Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa traveled to Saudi Arabia on his first foreign trip. The Associated Press reported that the visit was part of a broader effort by Damascus to reshape its alliances, with Syria moving away from Iran and closer to Saudi Arabia.
Al-Sharaa traveled to Saudi Arabia with Foreign Minister Asad al-Shaibani. The agency noted that he was greeted at the Saudi airport by the country's flag and a new three-star Syrian flag.
Meeting with Mohammed bin Salman
Al-Sharaa held talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the Al-Yamamah Palace in Riyadh. The Saudi press described the visit as "a step towards supporting the security and stability of Syria." The official Saudi news agency reported that Prince Al-Shara congratulated him on his election as president and wished the Syrian people stability and progress. Al-Shara thanked the Saudi government for its support.
The meeting discussed the future of Syria, improving the country's economic situation and preserving its territorial integrity.
Changes in Syria's political direction
In 2011, Saudi Arabia was one of the main countries supporting the rebels against Bashar al-Assad. However, Assad remained in power with the help of Russia and Iran. Al-Sharaa's rise to power is paving the way for a shift in Syria's international position.
In January, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan visited Damascus and announced that talks were underway to lift sanctions on Syria. Al-Sharaa is stepping up diplomatic efforts to lift international sanctions.
Before his visit, he met with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and stressed the importance of Qatar's support for Syria.
The landscape is changing
The Guardian noted that the visit signals a major shift in the composition of regional alliances. At the same time, Saudi Arabia has readmitted Syria to the Arab League in 2023, indicating a different approach from Qatar and Turkey, Al-Sharaa's main allies.
Syria is still under threat from various militants. The explosions in Manbij, which are causing civilian casualties, show the seriousness of the situation. Al-Shara aims to lead Syria towards peace and stability through close cooperation with Saudi Arabia. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
