Alisher Usmanov wins lawsuit against popular German newspaper

Alisher Usmanov wins lawsuit against popular German newspaper
The Hamburg regional court in Germany has banned the Tagesspiegel publication from publishing unfounded information about businessman Alisher Usmanov. In particular, the court rejected the allegations that he acquired assets illegally.

According to EU Today, these accusations were used to justify sanctions imposed on Usmanov by the European Union and led to the opening of an investigation against him in Germany.

The article in question was written by Andrei Popov and published in Tagesspiegel in November 2024. The billionaire's lawyers sent an official appeal to the publication, after which the article was removed from the site, but the requirement not to repeat the allegations in it in the future was not met. As a result, Usmanov filed a lawsuit in court, and his claim was satisfied.

The court banned the Tagesspiegel newspaper from reporting that Usmanov had illegally accumulated wealth "in exchange for services and cooperation" with the Russian government. It also found that the allegations that the businessman owned real estate on Lake Tegernsee and the yacht "Dilbar" were not proven. The court noted that claiming that Usmanov lived in Bavaria amounted to a violation of personal rights.

The court also found a number of claims against Usmanov by Forbes magazine and the German Tegernseer Stimme and ARD television channels to be unfounded and banned their distribution.

The businessman's press secretary described the decision as "further evidence of the contradictory approach of European Union officials in applying personal sanctions." Usmanov's lawyer, Joachim Steinhofel, called the court's decision "an important victory."
