German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed in a telephone conversation on Friday evening, February 21, that Kiev should participate in any future negotiations to end Russia's war in Ukraine.
According to German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit, Scholz and Zelensky discussed "the current military and humanitarian situation, as well as ways to establish a just peace in Ukraine." Both leaders agreed that European security issues should be discussed jointly with European countries.
Hebestreit also noted that during the phone conversation, Scholz assured Zelensky that "Germany will continue to support Ukraine until a just and lasting peace is achieved, in close coordination with European and international partners."
US position on the war in Ukraine
Earlier, the US administration had put forward the initiative to engage in dialogue with Russia on the future of Ukraine without the participation of Ukraine itself and Europe. On February 18, Washington and Moscow agreed to hold talks in Riyadh to resolve differences and quickly end the war in Ukraine. The discussion included, among others, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, but representatives of Europe and Ukraine were not invited.
US President Donald Trump said that he may meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the near future. He also sharply criticized Zelensky, calling him a "dictator" and saying that he did not have to participate in the Ukrainian negotiations.
Since February 2022, Ukraine has been defending itself against Russia with financial and military support from European countries, as well as the previous US administration led by former President Joe Biden. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
