In Syria, there were serious clashes between supporters of former President Bashar al-Assad and security forces of the new government. As a result, 13 people were killed. According to Reuters, the incident took place in the city of Jabla, located in western Syria.
The city of Jabla is one of the areas inhabited by the Alawite community, to which Assad and his family belong. The new government's security forces have been operating against armed groups associated with former special forces commander Suhel al-Hassan during Assad's rule.
Curfew declared
A curfew has been imposed in the Syrian cities of Latakia, Tartus and Homs as clashes escalate. According to Mustafa Knefati, head of the Latakia Public Security Directorate, the “remnants of Assad’s militia” carried out a well-planned attack on security checkpoints and patrols in Jabla. The attack resulted in the deaths and injuries of many soldiers.
The political situation is intensifying
Currently, demonstrations in support of the government are taking place in the cities of Aleppo, Idlib, Damascus, Hama and Homs. Reuters described the clashes as “one of the most brutal acts of violence” since the new government came to power in December 2024.
In December 2024, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham fighters entered Damascus and seized power in the country. Bashar al-Assad fled and took refuge in Moscow. The new government appointed Ahmed al-Sharra as Syria’s interim president.
The current clashes show that the new government is facing serious resistance in its consolidation. It remains unclear how the political and military situation will develop.
