Member of the European Parliament Raphael Glucksmann has demanded that US officials return the Statue of Liberty to France. The current administration and the US president show with their decisions that the values of freedom are not close to them. Excerpts from the politician's speech on Sunday, March 17, were quoted by the AFP agency.
Glucksmann, who actively supports Ukraine, in his speech condemned Washington for its rapprochement with Moscow. According to him, the United States has "decided to go over to the side of the tyrants." The French politician also criticized the Donald Trump administration for firing scientists who emphasized scientific freedom.
In this regard, the MEP called on the US to return the Statue of Liberty. “We gave it to you, but you despise it,” he said, addressing the Americans.
The Statue of Liberty was created in France under the direction of sculptor Auguste Bartholdi. It was a gift from France to the United States to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the American Revolutionary War, in which the French supported the Americans.
The 46-meter-high bronze statue was unveiled in 1886 on Liberty Island in New York. It once symbolized hope for a better life for millions of immigrants waiting to enter the United States at nearby Ellis Island, AFP reports.
Trump believes the US will annex Greenland
The United States will annex Greenland, Donald Trump is confident of this. On March 13, during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House, the US President answered a question about the possible annexation of the island, saying, “I think it will happen.” “We need it (Greenland) for international security,” Trump explained. He also expressed confidence that Rutte would play an “important role” in Greenland’s accession to the United States.
In turn, Mark Rutte said that he “does not want to drag NATO into discussions on this issue,” but acknowledged that Greenland is important for Arctic security due to the growing interest of Russia and China in the region.
Rasmus Jarloff, the chairman of the defense committee of the Danish parliament, which includes Greenland, wrote on his page on the X social network that US claims to the island could lead to “a war between two NATO countries” and criticized Mark Rutte’s actions during the meeting with Trump. “Greenland voted against independence from Denmark immediately and will never become American,” Jarloff added.
