A New York University student, Logan Rozos, was denied his diploma after giving a graduation speech on May 14, in which he condemned the atrocities happening in Gaza. This was reported by CNN.
In his speech, Rozos stated:
“As I speak from the heart today, it is impossible not to mention the massacre occurring in Gaza. The United States supports this war politically and militarily. Our taxes are funding this bloodshed.”
His words were met with both applause and boos from the audience, while some university faculty members also clapped in support.
University launches disciplinary investigation
Following the speech, the university administration announced that Rozos' diploma would be withheld pending a disciplinary review.
Trump administration supports firm action
Some political circles in the U.S., including supporters of Donald Trump, are calling for sanctions against students participating in pro-Palestinian protests. In early 2025, NYU was included by the Department of Justice in a list of institutions “affected by antisemitism.”
Council on American-Islamic Relations: “This is a betrayal”
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) responded by urging the university to grant the student his diploma and labeled the disciplinary actions a violation of U.S. freedoms.
“Punishing students for expressing their views is a betrayal of American liberties,” the CAIR statement read.
