On May 20, an expanded "jumbo" meeting of EU foreign and defense ministers was held in Brussels. The focus of the talks was on the situation in Ukraine and tactical and political solutions to achieve peace.
"An unconditional ceasefire is the main goal"
The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kallas, emphasized at the end of the meeting:
"For us, the first priority remains an unconditional and complete ceasefire. Our main goal is to bring the Russian president to the negotiating table and bring the peace plan to a practical stage."
According to her, EU members have decided to significantly increase pressure on the Kremlin to achieve this goal.
Sanctions will not only continue - they will expand
At the meeting, the European Union approved another maximum package of sanctions against Russia. In addition, the start of work on new restrictions was unanimously approved. It is emphasized that these plans are already being developed and all EU countries are actively involved in this process.
Germany calls for an “outside the box” approach
German Foreign Minister Johannes Wadeful believes that Europe now has to work on new solutions “without excluding any options.” He added:
“We must now give Putin a reliable and firm signal about the concrete steps that are expected. This should be done through political pressure to show him that he is ready for negotiations.”
From the Zamin.uz editorial office:
The European Union is trying to pave the way for peace talks by increasing pressure on the Kremlin. The sanctions policy and clear diplomatic initiatives confirm the EU’s decisive participation in this process. What do you think - can such pressure really bring Putin to the negotiating table?
