For the first time in world history, a large, modern, and innovative floating fish farming vessel for salmon production is being built in China. This unique farm is named Su Hai No.1 and will soon be handed over to the customer. The main goal of the project is to better meet the country’s domestic demand for salmon.
This impressive ship is approximately 250 meters long and is being constructed at the famous Huangpu Wenchong Shipyard in Guangzhou, China. The construction is enriched with modern technologies, and the total cost is estimated at 600 million yuan (approximately 83.6 million US dollars).
The floating farm concept is being implemented by Jiangsu Lianshen Marine Technology. According to company representatives, the vessel is expected to produce around 8,000 tons of salmon annually. This achievement is regarded as a real technological revolution in the aquaculture industry.
Unlike traditional marine fish farms, the Su Hai No.1 floating farm will be prepared for any natural emergencies. For example, in cases of strong typhoons, storms, or harmful algal blooms, the vessel can quickly relocate to safer areas. This ensures the safety of the fish and stable, high-quality production.
In addition, the ship is equipped with modern processing facilities. That means all processes — from harvesting to full processing of salmon — will be carried out onboard. This provides both time and cost efficiency in the industry.
Currently, China cannot fully meet its domestic demand for salmon and relies heavily on imports. According to statistics, 80% of the salmon consumed in China is imported, primarily from Norway and Chile. In 2023 alone, China imported over 100,000 tons of salmon, and experts predict this could double to 200,000 tons by 2030.
That is why the Chinese government is focusing on further developing domestic salmon production. The Su Hai No.1 floating farm is seen as a strategic step in this direction. Operating in the Yellow Sea, the vessel will help reduce China’s dependence on imported salmon.
This innovative project could also open a new direction for the global aquaculture industry. If successful, other countries may also begin adopting floating farm technology.
Thus, this new and innovative project from China may serve not only to satisfy internal demand but also to develop the global fish industry. It could be considered a real breakthrough in the field.
The vessel is expected to be officially launched in June, marking a new stage for China’s seafood industry. The global community is following this historic project with great interest. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
