British authorities have been placed on high alert due to the escalating situation in the Middle East. This was reported by the reputable Financial Times citing government sources.
It is reported that at a meeting of the government’s emergency committee — Cobra, chaired by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, a potential US military strike against Iran was discussed. Members of the committee assessed the situation as “very unstable and dangerous.”
The main focus of the meeting was what actions the US President Donald Trump (if in office) might take — specifically, if he chooses to support Israel and directly intervene in the conflict, and whether there is a possibility of using the joint British-American military base on Diego Garcia island in the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean. However, according to FT sources, London has not given a clear approval for such an operation, and Washington has not yet made a specific request either.
Financial Times writes that up to now, the United Kingdom has managed to stay out of the tensions between Iran and Israel. According to the sources, London holds the position that it “does not intend to take any action that could lead to the closure of the embassy in Tehran.”
A UK government representative declined to comment on the details of the “hypothetical operation” in response to journalists’ questions.
The new emerging tension on the global stage poses a serious test for political balance and international security, and European officials are closely monitoring the situation. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
