There is a noticeable difference between the European Union’s and the United States’ positions on Ukraine, writes politico.eu. However, this difference encourages Europe to cooperate with America as much as possible, as it is also acknowledged that the continent lacks sufficient capacity to act independently.
Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever stated in an interview ahead of the EU summit that a common opinion on Ukraine has not yet been formed. “It is clear to us that Europe must learn a lesson from this problem. It is time to strengthen our power strategically. But currently, we have no opportunity to fully replace the Americans. That’s why we aim for the longest possible cooperation with the US,” emphasized De Wever.
According to him, Europe has a clearer and more principled stance on Ukraine than the US. However, this leadership is not sufficient to ensure complete diplomatic activity. Europe remains politically and economically dependent on American support.
At the summit, the Belgian leader called on EU countries to clearly and openly express their support for Ukraine. “At the NATO summit, the Ukrainian delegation participated only informally, but was not at the negotiating table — this is truly a regrettable situation,” he explained.
De Wever particularly emphasized that Europe must express solidarity and support for Ukraine more openly. In his view, Hungary is an exception, while the other 26 countries must show they stand behind the Ukrainian people.
Another example of the lack of a unified position in Europe on Ukraine is the opposition of Poland’s new president Karol Nawrocki to Ukraine joining the EU. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also believes the doors to the EU and NATO are closed to Ukraine, as this step could lead the West into direct conflict with Russia.
At the same time, Europe’s and the US’s interests on Ukraine do not always align. While Europe seeks strategic stability, US political and military assistance remains decisive.
As a result, support for Ukraine at EU summits and NATO meetings always leads to sharp debates and negotiations. European leaders are trying to find new paths to reduce dependence on the US and to express an independent stance.
The most important thing — there is no unified view on Ukraine, but Europe still considers itself dependent on America and hopes to continue cooperation. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
