At least 14 killed in South Korea floods and landslides
At least 14 people have been killed following several days of relentless torrential rain that triggered widespread flooding and landslides in South Korea, the country’s disaster response agency has confirmed. Another 12 individuals remain missing, raising fears the death toll may rise further.

The worst-affected areas are in the south and central regions of the country. In Sancheong County alone, six people were killed and seven reported missing. In Chungcheong Province, an entire village was buried under earth and debris. In northern Gapyeong County, two people died when a landslide engulfed several homes, according to AFP.

Footage from Gapyeong showed residents wading through thick mud across a damaged bridge as they headed toward evacuation centers. Across the country, nearly 10,000 people have evacuated their homes since the rain began on Wednesday. Power outages have affected more than 41,000 households.

Thousands of roads, homes, and farms have been destroyed or submerged, with reports of livestock losses and damage to agricultural lands.

President Lee Jae-myung declared the worst-hit regions as special disaster zones on Sunday and initiated a broad recovery operation involving multiple government agencies. Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung called on local governments to mobilize “all available resources” without delay.

Although rainfall has lessened in the south and center, heavy showers are now affecting Seoul and surrounding northern areas. Weather officials warned that the rain is expected to stop by late Sunday, but will be followed by a severe heatwave, which could hinder recovery efforts.
