The military jet crash at Milestone College in Dhaka has shaken the entire nation. However, amid the tragedy, a story of remarkable human bravery emerged: 46-year-old English teacher Maherin Chowdhury repeatedly ran into a burning classroom to save her students, sacrificing her own life.
The accident occurred on July 21 when a Bangladesh Air Force F-7 BGI fighter jet crashed into the college building. The military reported a technical malfunction in the aircraft.
At least 29 people, most of them schoolchildren, died in the incident. The pilot also lost his life at the scene.
Maherin Chowdhury entered the burning building multiple times to rescue her students. Even as her clothes caught fire, she managed to save the lives of at least 20 children.
According to her brother Munaf Chowdhury, Maherin did not abandon her students even in her final moments. When her husband urged her by phone to escape, she responded, “They are also my children. They are burning — how can I leave?”
Maherin Chowdhury’s courage has been widely praised across Bangladesh. She was laid to rest on July 23 in her hometown of Nilphamari district. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
