Russian officers on duty during AZAL attack identified

New details have emerged regarding the incident involving the AZAL airline in December 2024, Minval Politika reported. According to the Azerbaijani outlet on Thursday, July 24, the names of all Russian military personnel who were on duty at the time of the aircraft being targeted have been revealed. However, Minval did not specify the source of this information. No other sources have confirmed the report so far.

According to Minval, those on duty during the missile launch included: Captain Dmitry Pudovkin, senior navigator of the 51st air defense division; Lieutenant Colonel Vladimir Yanovsky, operations officer at the Southern Military District headquarters; and Colonel Gennady Eremenko, duty officer at the 4th Air Defense Army command post.

The Russian Telegram channel Astra, citing a leaked database, has confirmed that the three individuals named by Minval are indeed affiliated with military service.

On July 22, Minval also reported that the direct order to strike the aerial target was given by Major General Alexander Tolopilo, commander of the 51st air defense division. The publication said this information came to light during an internal investigation, in which Lieutenant Colonel Nikolay Orlyansky stated that he received the order from Tolopilo and relayed it to Captain Pudovkin.
